 Education in times of Strikes.

I chose South Korea because I am a fan of BTS and listening to their song N.O I realized the pressure that students in this country are subjected to, where it only matters to be the best and have good grades to enter major universities. This is because in his society, perfection and appearances are everything.

"Dream is gone, no time to breathe
School, house and PC room is all we have
We live the same life
And have to become number one
For us it's like a double spy between dream and reality

In my search about the education in South Korea, I found that this is a mainstay for the development of society, for the same reason that education is free and compulsory from 7 to 15 years old and both the State and citizens carry out a great investment in education (dedicates almost 7% of its GDP). Furthermore, educational laws are not affected by changes in government. But South Koreans modify the school curriculum every five years to suit the country's growth and job needs.

Who is the one who made us into study machines?
It's either number one or a failure
They trap us in borders, the adults
There’s no choice but to consent
Even if we think simply, it’s the survival of the fittest
Who do you think is the one who makes us step on even our close friends to climb up? What?

However, despite all these important data that make Korean education quality for its citizens (something we must all aspire to and strive to incorporate in our countries). This also presents important problems that significantly affect their society such as extreme competition among students to obtain the best results, which ends up damaging the mental health of students due to the great pressure to which they are subjected. The long study days (when they finish their day, students go to academies to continue their studies) so there is no time for leisure or to interact with others. The last big problem is that its educational system encourages memorization, and leaves aside creativity, which in the future becomes that many Koreans do not know how to improvise or work in a team.

Adults say that we have it so easy
They say I'm on my way to happiness
Then how do you explain my unhappiness?
There's no conversation topics other than studying
Outside, there are so many kids like me, living the life of a puppet
Who will take responsibility?" (N.O by BTS)

I hope that in the future all these problems will disappear, and the students can learn without the need to lose something as important as their mental health.

  1. Hi Aracelly! I didn't knew much about the scholar and educational system of South Korea, but your post really interested me. A competitive and rigid system for the students is one of the worst actions that can be done in education.
